HISTORY
From a missionary’s dream to the ends of the earth!
In
the hot summer month of August, 1973, Eleanor Acker, a young, single
missionary lady from New York, who God had called to the mountains of
Kentucky, approached Montis and Destaphine Boyd with the idea of
starting a Wednesday Night Bible Study in their home on Prater Creek
Road in Floyd County. They agreed and asked Randolph Crisp, a pastor
who had just moved back into the area, to lead the study. He accepted.
In the fall of 1973 this small group decided to organize into a church. They
moved into an old store building and called the name of the church
Prater Creek Baptist Church (PCBC). They named Randolph Crisp as
founding pastor. Eleanor taught Sunday School for the children.
In the summer of 1981 a flash flood destroyed their meeting place. Meanwhile, they had purchased some property and construction on a new church house was already underway. The small congregation moved into the basement of the unfinished church building.
In 1989 the facility was completed and the assembly moved upstairs into what is now the main auditorium of PCBC.
Three other pastors have succeeded the late Randolph Crisp. Pastor
David Thacker, then Pastor Gary Fish led the church until November 2003
when current pastor, J. B. Hall, began his ministry at PCBC.
This dream of a young missionary lady, the late Eleanor Acker, to reach people in the mountains of Kentucky with the gospel of Jesus Christ, is now being extended to the ends of the earth. Plans
are currently underway at PCBC to develop an international ministry
that will include radio, television, and interactive Internet
ministries, as well as a bible college to train and send ministers and
missionaries around the world.
